Cannot enable HDR from Windows 11 to Samsung TV

We want you to experience all that your TV has to offer, even when connected to a computer. Windows 11 comes with HDR features but in order for them to work with your TV, the proper resolution needs to be set. By creating a custom resolution on your computer and then enabling the proper setting on your TV, you will be enjoying HDR again.

Cannot enable HDR from Windows 11 to Samsung TV

Connect your computer to your TV using an HDMI cord.

We recommend to also have a second monitor connected as well and to extend the desktop in case something goes wrong when setting the resolution on the TV.

Set the TV to allow HDR on the HDMI port.

This can be found in the General settings under External Device Manager and the exact name of the setting to turn on varies between models. It could be called Input Signal Plus or HDMI UHD Color. Turn this on for the HDMI port that your PC is connected to.

On your TV, open the e-manual and open the section for supported resolutions.

In the Support section of the settings menu, open the E-manual. Perform a search for the section titled Read before connecting a computer (supported resolutions).

Scroll down until you find the section for 3840 x 2160 @ 60 hz, and write down the information from this line (or take a picture).

Set your connection to the TV as 4K resolution and 60 hz.

Right click the desktop and select Display Settings.
In the Display resolution section, select 3840 x 2160. (This may already be selected and may be marked Recommended.)
Scroll down to the very bottom and click Advanced display settings.
Select the TV from the drop down list.
If the refresh rate is not already 60 Hz (or 59 Hz), click Display adapter properties for Display X.
Click the Monitor tab at the top of the new window.
In the Screen refresh rate section, select 60 Hz from the drop down. If this option is not available, make sure your graphics card drivers are up to date and that your graphics card can support a 4k 60hz connection.

Create custom resolution on your computer that matches what was in the e-manual.

There's three main brands of graphics card. Use these links to find how to do a custom resolution on NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. For more assistance, contact the manufacturer of your graphics card or computer.

If you don't know what brand graphics card you have you can look it up on your computer. Navigate to Control Panel > Device Manager. Expand Display Adapters and you will see the graphics card listed there.

When setting a custom resolution, start by setting it to 3840 x 2160 @ 60 hz, and let the rest of the settings fill in by themselves (and use the 'Automatic' setting if there is one). Then, switch to the Manual setting and make any changes necessary in order to match all of the information provided by the TV's e-manual. In particular you will want to check:

All of the frequencies match. Horizontal refresh rate, vertical refresh rate (60 hz), and pixel clock.

Check that the polarity matches what's in the e-manual.

In Windows 11, enable HDR.

And now finally, Windows 11 will detect that your TV does indeed have HDR capability in 4K, at 60hz, and you can enjoy the full capability of your TV while connected to your computer.

Right click your desktop one last time, select Display settings, select the monitor which represents your TV, and turn on HDR.
