Galaxy phone or tablet will not charge

If your Galaxy phone or tablet is draining quickly and doesn't seem to charge at all, doesn't charge past 80% or 85%, doesn't charge when connected to a PC, or doesn't charge when connected to Samsung DeX, there are a couple of things that may be causing the problem. For example, you may simply need to replace a worn out USB cable, or make sure you're using the correct charger.

Important
Remember to NOT use any other device's charger or third-party chargers because they can hinder charging and cause battery issues. Use a Samsung charger to properly charge your device.
1

Verify the device's components.

  • If your device is reporting that the temperature is too low to charge, unplug the charger and allow it to return to a normal temperature before proceeding.
  • Verify that the device, charger, and USB cable have no physical damage.
  • Check for liquid damage. The indicator is found inside the SIM or SD slot, and will appear pink or red if it has been exposed to liquid.
  • Check the USB connections for corrosion and bent pins.
  • The USB cable should be secured firmly in the charging port with very little mobility. If your device detects a poor USB connection, an error will be displayed.
  • Inspect the device, charger, and USB cable for dust or other foreign materials.
2

Reboot the device.

Press and hold the Side button and Volume Down until you see the Samsung logo on the screen.
3

Charge the device.

Charge your device using a known good Samsung travel charger, plugged in to a known working outlet for at least 1 hour. The battery charging indicator may take up to 10 minutes to appear on the device's screen if the battery is completely depleted.
4

Test the device with another charger.

If possible, test to see if your device works with an alternate Samsung charger.
5

Power on the device.

Disconnect the device from the charger, and then attempt to turn it on by pressing and holding the Power button for 15-20 seconds.

If the device turns on, the device needed to be charged. Turn off the device and reconnect it to the factory travel charger until it is fully charged.

6

Request service.

If the phone or tablet does not charge after performing the previous troubleshooting steps, please visit a Samsung walk-in service center or you can schedule a repair service online.

Make sure the switch next to Protect battery or Battery protection is turned off. The switch will be gray when it is turned off. If this option is turned on, your device will not charge past 85%.
3

Charge your phone or tablet.

Connect your device to a Samsung charger and allow it to charge to 100%.
Samsung phone or tablet will not charge when connected to a PC
Important
Do NOT use any other charger or third-party chargers because they can hinder charging and cause battery issues. The Samsung factory charger is required to properly charge the phone.
1

Verify the device’s components.

  • Verify that the device and USB cable have no physical or liquid damage.
  • Inspect the device and USB cable for dust or other foreign materials.
  • Check the USB connections for corrosion and bent pins.
  • The USB cable should be secured firmly with very little mobility. If your device detects a poor USB connection, an error will be displayed.
2

Verify the charger.

Samsung recommends that you use the travel adapter that came with your device. If you need to use the PC as a charger, we recommend that you power off your phone or tablet, so it will charge faster.
3

Verify the PC USB port.

If the PC has an available USB 3.0 port, often marked in blue, then faster charging may be available. Try using this port when charging your device.

Some PCs may also have a designated charging port intended to provide higher power output. Check your PC's manual for details.

Samsung phone does not charge while using DeX Pad or Station
Important
DeX accessories only support high-speed chargers. DeX mode or Screen Mirroring mode will not launch when using regular chargers with less than 9V/1.67A output. Battery packs are not compatible with DeX.
1

Check the physical connections.

Check the DeX accessory's physical wire connections and make sure that all connections are securely plugged in. Inspect the wires and connectors for damage, and replace any damaged wires.
2

Check the power source.

Unplug the charger from the DeX Station or DeX Pad, and plug it in directly to the phone.

  • If your phone is in Maximum power saving mode, it cannot launch DeX mode.
  • If the phone is charging slowly, the charger is probably incompatible with DeX. Switch to a high-speed charger with an output of more than 9V/1.67A.
  • If the phone is not charging at all, the charger may be defective. Replace the charger with a compatible high-speed charger.
3

Restart your phone.

  • Remove your phone from the DeX Station or DeX pad, and restart it using either the Power button or the Power icon in the Quick settings panel.
  • Reconnect your phone to the DeX Station or DeX pad.

Disconnect wired headphones or charging cables.

If headphones are connected to your device, it could prevent the device from charging. Disconnect the headphones or place your device in a landscape position. Do not use your device while it is wirelessly charging.

If a charger or USB cable is connected to your device, the wireless charging feature may be unavailable. Disconnect any cables from the device’s USB port.

4

Use the correct charger.

  • Fast wireless charging will only be enabled on devices that have been certified by Samsung and the Wireless Power Consortium. If you are using a non-Samsung wireless fast charger, check with the manufacturer or WPC for the charger's certifications.
