Pursuing net zero carbon emissions as one of the world's
largest ICT manufacturer

When Samsung Electronics acts, the effects are felt across the industry

  • 2027 - Aim to match electric power needs with renewable energy in DX Division and all overseas sites* * DX∙DS Divisions, outside of Korea
  • 2030 - Aim to achieve net zero carbon emissions in DX Division (Scope 1∙2), Plan to reduce power consumption by 30%1) on average of major models of seven product categories2)
  • 2050 - Aim to transition to 100% renewal energy, Aim to achieve company-wide net zero carbon emissions (Scope 1∙2)

Progress in 2023

  • 2.24 million tonnes (37.5%) of direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1) were reduced through the expansion of process gas treatment facilities, optimization of process equipment compared to the previous year
  • 9,289GWh of renewable energy consumed globally reaching a transition rate of 31% (DX 93.4%, DS 24.3%)
  • Transition to 100% renewable energy achieved in the U.S., Europe, China, Vietnam, India, and Brazil
  • Procured renewable power through PPAs (Power Purchase Agreements) in the U.S., China, and India and signed a new agreement in South Korea
  • Product energy use efficiency improved by 25%1) through applying high energy efficiency technology to leading models of seven major product categories2)

1) Compared to the equivalent range of performance and specification of models from 2019
2) Major product categories (2023 models): Refrigerator (RF85C9241AP), Air conditioner (AR10DYEAAWK/ST), Washing machine (WF25CB8795BK), TV (KQ75QNC900FXKR), Monitor (LS49AG950NKXKR), PC (NP960XFG), Smartphone (SM-S918)

Circular
Economy

Increasing
resource circularity
from raw material
to disposal

Striving for a circular economy

  • 2022 - Established Circular Economy Lab dedicated to researching material recycling technologies
  • 2030 - Apply recycled resin to 50% of plastic parts used in DX products1), Aim to expand e-waste collection system to all countries with sales presence, collecting a cumulative 10 million2) tonnes
  • 2050 - Aim for all plastic used in DX products to incorporate recycled resin1), Aim to collect 25 million tonnes of e-waste cumulatively

Progress in 2023

  • 157,939 tonnes of plastic with recycled resin used achieving an utilization rate of 25%
  • 599,153 tonnes of e-waste collected as of 2023 (Cumulative amount from 2009 to 2023: 6.3 million tonnes)
  • Circular Economy Lab, developed recycling of waste materials including r-ABS, a recycled material from waste Styrofoam after installing our products and r-PP, derived from by-product generated during the manufacturing of household items

1) Ratio of recycled content varies by plastic parts
2) Recycled plastic ratio based on the weight of parts
3) Plastic parts developed by Samsung
4) From 2009

Clean Tech
Innovation

Managing carbon
emissions and
reducing
particulate matter

Aiming for open collaboration with and support of communities, startups, and suppliers

  • Support partner companies to achieve their carbon reduction targets and to invest in environmental resources through our win-win funds
  • 2030 - Develop carbon capture technology for semiconductor business sites. Expand the use of particulate matter reduction technology. * Korean business sites, suppliers, partner companies, etc
  • After 2030 - Apply carbon capture technology to semiconductor manufacturing facilities(Contributing to 2050 net zero)

Progress in 2023

  • Integrated SAIT (Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology)’s Carbon Capture Research Institute and Particulate Matter Research Institute into ASRC (Air Science Research Center)
  • Conducted R&D of highly efficient CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilization) technology, developed and piloted a new type of particulate matter reduction air purification system for use in air conditioning, bus terminals, underground parking lots, offices and supplier test rooms
Sustainabilty in
Operations

Managing our
environmental
impact

Aiming to treat water and air pollutants to natural state levels and to meticulously manage and recycle waste and chemicals

  • 2025 - Aim to obtain ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ Platinum Certification* for all global business sites(*Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global environmental safety certification body, provides Platinum certification for Zero Waste to Landfill)
  • 2030 - Aim to restore 100% of water used by the DX Division. Aim to achieve zero increase* in water withdrawal for DS Division. * Compared to 2021
  • 2040 - Remove pollutants generated during the semiconductor production process to its natural state* with minimal environmental impact prior to discharge (DS Division), * Treating effluent to the level of upper stream water and emissions to clean air quality meeting the national standards

Progress in 2023

  • Platinum certification in Zero Waste to Landfill validation attained for 14 of DX Division and 7 of DS Division’s global sites (cumulative, as of March 2024)
