Steps to get your Samsung dishwasher starting and filling with water
When you select a cycle on your dishwasher, it first clears any excess water remaining from previous cycles. You may hear the machine operating during this phase, but it’s important to note that the dishwasher isn't filling with water yet; this initial noise is simply part of the normal draining process. Once the drain cycle completes, the dishwasher will begin the selected wash cycle. If there is a delay in starting, it could be due to several factors, such as the Child Lock being activated, the Delay Start function being engaged, the door not fully closed, or the Start button being held too long.
Note: While the advice in this guide is universally applicable, it has been tailored specifically for our Canadian customers.
The following steps will help you if your dishwasher won’t start or fill with water:
When you start a cycle, the dishwasher initially works to drain any excess water left from previous cycles. This may cause the machine to sound like it is operating, even though it isn't filling with water yet. This is a normal part of the process. After completing the drain cycle, which lasts about 35 seconds, the dishwasher will then proceed with the selected wash cycle.
Ensure that both the door and the door latch are in good condition. Damage to either can prevent the dishwasher from closing properly. If the dishwasher detects that the door is open, it will not start.
If the buttons on your dishwasher are unresponsive, it’s possible that the Child Lock feature is activated. This safety feature is indicated by a padlock icon and can be deactivated by pressing and holding the designated button (usually one associated with the Heated Dry or Sanitize function) for 3 seconds. On some Samsung dishwasher models, this may be a specific Child Lock button or labeled as Control Lock (see the pictures below for examples from different Samsung dishwashers). When Child Lock is active, the padlock icon or the associated button will light up.
Ensure that the Delay Start feature is not activated if you intend to start washing dishes immediately. This feature delays the commencement of the wash cycle until the selected time elapses. Refer to your model's user manual for specific instructions on how to manage this setting.
Many dishwasher models use blinking lights as error indicators. If your dishwasher displays blinking lights or an error code, it may be signaling a problem that prevents it from starting. Refer to the blinking lights or error code guides for the appropriate troubleshooting steps.
Press the Start button without holding it down. Holding the Start button for more than 3 seconds cancels the current cycle and initiates the draining process, indicated by a blinking “1” on the display. If this occurs, simply press Start again to resume the cycle.
Locate the circuit breaker that controls your dishwasher's power supply in your home. Turn it off and wait for 30 seconds before turning it back on. After restoring power, attempt to start a new cycle on your dishwasher.
